About 'dd/ts'
'dd' is for Dipankar Das, and 'ts' for Tridib sengupta'. 'Tridib Sengupta' is the pen-name under which I started writing Bangla prose. Bangla prose came to me around the end of the years of political activism. Bangla prose was more the method of learning to live with the void that came up when this politics started dying. Then the penname got stuck. I wrote all the Bangla novels, stories, essays under this penname over the period of 1987 till now. I was a very late starter in Bangla prose writing. As I said, it was more of a replacement of the poltical activism. I never wanted to leave politics. The colony settlements in New Barrackpur, Madhyamgram, all refugee-rehabilition areas: their poverty, their struggle -- the politics of this started defining my first significant way of seeing. But, then, as CPIM continued to be in power of West Bengal, it was becoming progressively impossible to go with the run of the things. So I left behind all those long twelve years of political activism from 1978 to 1989. In 1987 I started working as a journalist for a short period, that ended when I joined research under UGC fellowship. And very soon I joined as a teacher in Economics in a college in Purulia. My first Bangla novel, and my first book, 'Tapan Biswaser Khider Batrish Ghanta', Thirty-two hours of hunger of Tapan Biswas, was written and published around this time. Besides Bangla literature, another thing worked as a break too. That was Political Economy. I took Economics of Marx as my optional paper in MSc Economics that I did from Calcutta University. This flourished into the next major involvement, after politics and Bangla Literature. This started happening around 1987. The first major work that came out of this was margin of margin: Profile of an Unrepentant Postcolonial Collaborator -- a book written with two other co-authors (available on this site). This book was published in 2000. This book, and all the English writings on Political Economy were, by the rules of academy, done under the name Dipankar Das. So these two writings, Bangla and English, got two different names, both of which I carry now. After the publication of margin of margin the big thing that happened in my life was GNU-Linux, that is Linux, or FLOSS, as it is popularly called. Learning and applying Linux emerged as another extremely exciting thing. This excitement sustained. I wrote a book in Bangla on GNU-Linux, which was put on my site for free download and distribution in 2004. And this book was finally published in hard copy in 2005. My views of and on political economy contributed a lot in pushing me more into Linux: the context of poverty operating through the postcolonial economy of ours. GNU-Linux and political economy came crucially and intimately together in my next book FLOSS and Hegemony: A Study in Postcolonial Political Economy. This I finished very recently, in 2010. A copy of that is kept here too. A lot of all the texts that I have written for the last two and half decades, all those that I could retrieve electronically, are kept here on this site. My occupation is teaching Economics, that started in Purulia Manbajar College, and then, for almost the last two decades now, in S A Jaipuria College in Calcutta.নিজের নাম, দীপঙ্কর দাশ, ছেড়ে ত্রিদিব সেনগুপ্ত নামে লেখা শুরু করেছিলাম সেই রাজনৈতিক সক্রিয়তার প্রথম যৌবনে। রাজনীতি আমি ছাড়তে চাইনি, ওটা ছিল আমার নিউব্যারাকপুর মধ্যমগ্রামের কলোনি এলাকার দরিদ্র কিন্তু জীবন্ত অতীতের উত্তরাধিকার। ছাড়তে হওয়াটা আমার জীবনের সবচেয়ে বিষন্ন সিদ্ধান্তগুলোর একটা। কিন্তু পশ্চিমবঙ্গের ক্ষমতাসীন সিপিএম রাজনীতি গোটাটাকে এত নিকৃষ্ট করে দিয়েছিল, রাজনীতি করে চলাটা আমার আত্মসম্মানে লাগছিল। রাজনীতি ফুরিয়ে যাওয়ার বেদনা থেকেই, হয়ত, আমার লেখালেখির শুরু, বেশ বেশি বয়সে, ১৯৮৭-তে। প্রথমে বাংলা, পরে ইংরিজি। সাতাশিতে পাক্ষিক 'প্রতিক্ষণ' পত্রিকায় চাকরিও শুরু করি, বাইরে থেকে আসা লেখা সম্পাদনা এবং নিবন্ধ লেখা ছিল আমার কাজ। ইউজিসির ফেলোশিপে গবেষণা শুরু করে এই চাকরি ছেড়ে দিই, এবং তারপর চাকরি নিয়ে চলে যাই পুরুলিয়া মানবাজার কলেজে। একদম গোড়াতে লেখালেখি ছিল শুধুই সাহিত্য। আমার প্রথম উপন্যাস 'তপন বিশ্বাসের খিদের বত্রিশ ঘন্টা' প্রকাশিত হয় এই সময়েই। খুব দ্রুতই লেখালেখির একটা বড় জায়গা নিতে শুরু করে রাজনৈতিক অর্থনীতি। এর আগেই, আমার অর্থনীতি এমএসসির ঐচ্ছিক বিষয় 'মার্ক্সীয় অর্থনীতি' চর্চা থেকে যার শুরু। রাজনৈতিক অর্থনীতির ইংরিজি লেখাগুলো দীপঙ্কর দাশ লিখতে হয়, যেহেতু সেগুলো আমার পেশার সঙ্গে যুক্ত। এই ভাবে এই দুটো নামই আমার নিজের হয়ে যায়, দীপঙ্কর দাশ নামে ইংরিজি, আর ত্রিদিব সেনগুপ্ত নামে বাংলা লেখালেখি। ২০০০-এ প্রকাশিত হয় 'মার্জিন অফ মার্জিন: প্রোফাইল অফ অ্যান আনরিপেন্টান্ট পোস্টকলোনিয়াল কোলাবরেটর', অন্য দুজন সহলেখকের সঙ্গে (সাইটে রাখা আছে)। এই বই শেষ করার প্রায় পরপরই, প্রাথমিক ভাবে আমার লেখালেখিকে কম্পিউটার ভাইরাস থেকে বাঁচানোর স্বার্থে আমি গ্নু-লিনাক্স, যার জনপ্রিয় নাম লিনাক্স, ব্যবহার করা শুরু করি। আমার গরীব উত্তরঔপনিবেশিক দেশের সাপেক্ষে লিনাক্সের সম্ভাব্যতাটা আমায় প্রায় আমার লুপ্ত রাজনৈতিক জীবনের উত্তেজনাকে ফিরিয়ে দেয়। লিনাক্স নিয়ে বাংলায় বই লিখি, গ্নু-লিনাক্স: একটি ব্যক্তিগত যাত্রা। আমার সাম্প্রতিকতম বইটি এই লিনাক্স অভিজ্ঞতাকে রাজনৈতিক অর্থনীতির নিরিখে দেখা, এবং সেই ভিত্তিতে মার্ক্সবাদী তথা অন্যান্য বিপ্লবী রাজনৈতিক দর্শনের একটা মূল্যায়ন করার চেষ্টা। শেষ হয়েছে সদ্য, এই ২০১০ সালে, ওই একই বিষয় নিয়ে একটি বাংলা বই এখন আমি লিখছি। সমাপ্ত হওয়া মাত্রই তা থাকবে এই সাইটে। আমার লেখার একটা বড় অংশই, যা আমি ইলেকট্রনিক রকমে আনতে পেরেছি, রাখা আছে এখানে। লেখাপড়া প্রথমে নিউব্যারাকপুর কিশলয় স্কুল, তারপর হিন্দুস্কুল, সেন্ট জেভিয়ার্স কলেজ এবং কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়। পেশায় অর্থনীতির মাস্টারমশাই, প্রথমে পুরুলিয়া মানবাজার কলেজে, এবং গত প্রায় দুই দশক যাবত কলকাতায় জয়পুরিয়া কলেজে।
